Blue Water International Sculpture Exhibit

~ June 01, 2010 ~

The Blue Water Arts Council of the Community Foundation of St. Clair County is providing $10,000 in funding to coordinate the implementation of the first large scale public arts project in Port Huron.

Beginning this July, fifteen major art pieces will be installed and displayed throughout downtown Port Huron.  The pieces will be displayed for two years through a program with the Sauve Art Foundation out of Brighton, Michigan.  Other cities such as Royal Oak and Birmingham have also collaborated with the Sauve Art Foundation to bring public art to their downtowns.

Greg LashbrookLee Jones, Chair of the Foundation’s Arts Council, and Bruce Brown, City Manager of Port Huron, are leading the coordination of the “adoption program.” Each of the fifteen pieces of art are up for adoption for $1,500 which covers the costs for the two year program for each piece.  So far three pieces of art have been adopted.

“We’re calling it the Blue Water International Sculpture Exhibit,” said Mr. Jones.  The organizing committee hopes to have Sarnia eventually join other local communities including Lexington, St. Clair and Marine City, each installing multiple large pieces of public art this summer.  Mr. Jones added that this outdoor art project fits well with the efforts of the Blue Water Arts Council to launch the Arts & Culture Trail program this year to encourage tourism throughout the downtowns of the Blue Water region.

Over the last two years the Community Foundation and its Arts Council have provided more than $425,000 in funding for arts and culture in the region.
