Kids build art bench

Project used to educate on diversity

Students at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School have learned just how involved art can be.

To contribute to a special bench at the school, students were instructed to take some raw clay, roll it out, let it dry a bit, decorate it and lather the pieces with under glaze.

Then, they had to fire it, put a clear coat of glaze on it, cook it a second time – when that’s all done – glue the tile to the bench.

“We told them to do their best because this will be around a long time,” local potter Jane Barden said.

And who said it was easy?

Community Foundation works to reinvigorate Port Huron

PORT HURON, Mich. -- Acres of abandoned industrial buildings were once a formidable barricade separating the St. Clair River from Port Huron’s downtown. Today, the area has been cleared, and the Community Foundation of St. Clair County is spearheading efforts to reinvigorate the central city and its historical neighborhoods.

The initiative complements the large-scale redevelopment of the city’s waterfront by James Acheson, a local businessman who has committed more than $84 million in support of this effort through his private foundation and Acheson Ventures L.L.C. since the early 1990s.

“I think most people would say that philanthropy is leading the local effort to revitalize Port Huron,” said Randy Maiers, president and CEO of the community foundation.

Acheson, whose father helped found the community foundation in 1944, provided $1 million for an administrative endowment and challenged the community foundation to become a partner in efforts to restore the city’s economic and civic vitality, Maiers said.

Studio 1219, an arts incubator funded in part by a state “Cool Cities” grant in 2004, was a major catalyst for this effort.

The “Cool Cities” initiative was launched by the state in an effort to build vibrant, energetic cities that attract jobs and retain “knowledge workers,” who could be a key to the state’s economic future but are leaving Michigan at alarming rates.

One link with the state has opened up others, Maiers said.

“We also initiated the ‘Renaissance Roam’ two years ago. It’s a tour to attract potential buyers for homes we’ve rehabbed -- with the help of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority -- in the downtown neighborhoods anchored by Studio 1219.

“We’ve sold most of the homes. Compared to overall county home sales, our houses sold in about half the time -- an indication that people are choosing to live downtown. [But] the real estate market slump has hurt everyone, so we’ve had to focus our efforts elsewhere.”

As the local economy improves, the community foundation hopes to begin developing other types of downtown housing, including artist’s lofts.

“We have several empty buildings -- too many, in fact -- that would work for this purpose,” Maiers said.

“This is the first time the community foundation has dipped its toe into real estate. Although we’ve taken some bumps along the way, I think it’s been a success. It’s a great example of what partnerships can accomplish.”

800 people attend Renaissance Roam

800 people bought tickets to the third annual Renaissance Roam, which was tonight.

The event is a fund-raiser for Studio 1219, the arts incubator on Military Street in Port Huron.

Although the intent of the evening was one of business—its purpose was to raise money for the studio and provide exposure for local artists— there was a party atmosphere at ports of call such as New Orleans, in the former Harris House building on Huron Avenue, and Hamburg, Germany, in the Haynes’ building at the corner of Military and Water Streets.

Male volunteers in “Hamburg” wore vests that read “Kiss me, I’m German;” women
wore flowers in their hair. Guests could get a glass of beer and a handful of pretzels at the snack table to enjoy while admiring works of art.

“It’s absolutely wonderful to see people out and supporting the arts,” said Sue Andrews, who displayed fabric jackets at the Hamburg stop.

Have you ever dreamed of wandering the shores of the great port cities of the world? Here’s your opportunity to become a “world traveler” close to home. One of the most popular social events in the area returns this year when Studio 1219 hosts Renaissance: Roam the Globe on May 17, 2008, from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m. A major fund-raiser for the Studio, this year’s event will offer participants the opportunity to view and purchase juried art at historic buildings each representing a different “Port of Call.” These “destinations” will also offer food, music and beverages that reflect the flavor of that particular “port.” An added dimension this year will be stops at The Boat Nerds and the Highlander Sea. The Highlander Sea, a 154 foot gaff-rigged topsail schooner, was built in 1924 and now serves as Port Huron’s flagship and goodwill ambassador.

Patrons and participants can purchase a “passport’ for only ten dollars at any of the sites. Passports will be stamped at each “port” visited. Those with fully stamped passports are eligible for a drawing at the end of the evening. The Studio will be opened until 10:30 p.m. and will feature John Henry in the solo gallery. John is one of the best-selling artists at the Studio and is well-known for his versatility and the wide variety of his art offerings. The Studio will also represent a “port” and will also offer food, music and beverages. Again this year, the trolleys will help make transportation between sites easy and fun. Wristbands will be issued to those over the age of 21.

Live local music will be featured. The Studio will be decorated as an Irish Pub. Other “ports” will be New Orleans, Perth, Australia, and Italy. At each stop, you will find fellow “Roamers” enjoying the evening. Past participant, Paul Wessel, enthusiastically endorsed his experience by sharing that he had waited for something like this to happen in this area for a long time. “I’ll definitely come back next year,” said Wessel. Another comment overheard at last year’s Roam was, “We don’t have anything like THIS in Royal Oak!”

The concept which allows local artists, musicians, and chefs an opportunity to showcase their talent, is a first for our area. “What we are trying to promote is the idea that supporting arts and culture is good for the community as a whole because it keeps money circulating in our area.” says Tara Russel, Program Director of Studio 1219. “Where else can you buy one-of-a-kind gifts made locally and enjoy a stimulating evening of fun for only ten dollars?”

Is it possible for something so small -- a concept, one puzzle piece -- to change a suffering community? Can a tree grow from a seed?

Studio 1219 offers Port Huron and the surrounding communities a cultural seed. The studio, called an "arts incubator," provides economic stimulus through art, culture and educational opportunities. Studies show that when cultural opportunities are introduced and cultivated in a community, the result is some degree of economic growth.

The stars have aligned this week for food and wine lovers. Check all this stuff out:

Be a philanthropic cosmopolitan
Art, food, local bands, beer, wine and trolley rides ... almost sounds like a European art fair.

You can experience such a worldly art event Saturday at The Renaissance Roam, where you can trolley your way around the world from 4 to 10:30 p.m.

Purchase a passport (just a $10 donation) at Studio 1219, 1219 Military St. in downtown Port Huron, and hop on a trolley that will shuttle you to five worldly "port" locations with themes from Germany, Australia, Italy, New Orleans and Ireland.

At each "port," you'll find art displays from local artists, as well as tasty edibles and potables matching the location theme. Thirty-one artists are participating this year, so you're sure to find a treasure to fill that space above your sofa and a bauble to display on that small side table.

Proceeds from the art tour benefit our local art incubator, Studio 1219. So be a philanthropic cosmopolitan Saturday and eat and drink your way through one of the biggest art events of the year.
