Posted February 28, 2010
On March 6, 2010 Studio 1219 proudly hosts an opening for the mosaic show, “Magnificent M.A.M.: The Mosaic Artists of Michigan in Two and Three Dimensions.” This show, fresh from the Birmingham/Bloomfield Art Center, features the colorful designs and expressive renderings of fine art mosaics masters from all over the state. The public is invited to attend the reception March 6, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to share conversation, wine, appetizers and this unforgettable exhibit. The show runs from March 6th through April 17th. A bit of whimsy is offered with this show. For example, there are mosaic shoes of all sizes and shapes, a spectacular mosaic-covered guitar, and even a mosaic doghouse. Many M.A. M. members have achieved recognition in the art community from solo and international juried exhibits, publication in mosaic and other art books and magazines, and public and private commissions including a group project to recreate children’s artwork in mosaic for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan.
The Mosaic Artists of Michigan began in 2003 to share, educate, and promote the resurgence of interest and appreciation in the ancient art of mosaics. Modern mosaic masters create works for public displays and also smaller pieces for homes and gardens. Each member’s style is unique because the art of mosaics offers endless possibilities in color, texture, and shape.
LeeAnne McInnis, Exhibits Chair for Studio 1219, has dabbled with mosaics as a hobby, making gift items like picture frames and birdhouses for the home and garden. “What appeals to me about mosaics is the idea that you can pick up beach glass or colorful stones from places all over in your travels and bring them together in a piece that will be preserved,” McInnis said. “Or a broken piece,” she continued, “of heirloom china can be kept in another form. This interest is what lead me to the Birmingham Show, and what I found blew me away. These artists use all kinds of unusual and beautiful elements in their mosaics from gorgeous glass to tiny luminous beads. It’s breath-taking. Artisans have done mosaics for hundreds of years all over the world. Now we have the opportunity to own and display a piece in our homes that in the future may hang in museums as a cultural footprint of our time.”
