Giant Brassiere Attacks Studio 1219!
Posted October 19, 2009
A giant pink bra has attacked—and attached itself to— the front edifice of Studio 1219, the region’s premiere public art gallery and arts incubator at 1219 Military Street in Port Huron.
“It must have happened in the middle of the night!” exclaimed the Studio’s Executive Director, Lee-Perry Belleau.
“Oh, the Halloween horror of it all! We came in one morning, and there it was—bigger than life—attached to the building. We also believe it has spawned a number of smaller pink bras that may be moving around the area.”
The giant pink bra is part of the Studio’s month-long awareness and fundraising campaign for the fight to cure breast cancer. The campaign—made possible by the generous support of E&A Credit Union, Woman’s Life Insurance, and Citizens First Foundation—began in September when local artists, craftsman, organizations, businesses and individuals designed bras that are now on display at the Studio through the end of October. Also during October, various restaurants and businesses throughout the area designed and decorated bras that are now displayed at their businesses in a competition to raise the most funds. The official campaign opened at 8:00 pm Saturday, October 3 with the 9th Annual LUNAFEST Film Festival—short films by, for, and about women. It continued recently with an evening of “Women in Song and Verse” on Friday, October 16th.
But the big event is the Bra Finale, on Thursday, October 29 at 7pm. Local firemen will return to model the top brassieres and patrons will vote on their favorites. Winners in the restaurant competition will be announced, and the evening culminates with a silent auction as all 110 bras are sold off and the firemen model the top bras to raise money for the Studio and the Studio’s breast cancer fund. Proceeds from the campaign go toward the Studio’s breast cancer fund at the Community Foundation (for unisured and under-insured woman to get screenings at the local hospitals), and Studio 1219. Additionally, the national breast cancer fund received $250.00 from the LUNAFEST film festival screening at the Studio.
