Bring Out Your Brassieres! Studio 1219 Hosts Third Annual “The Art of Being a Woman”
Posted September 19, 2009

Studio 1219 invites patrons, organizations, restaurants and more to decorate a bra to display at Studio 1219 for the month of October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This project is designed to call attention to the importance of breast cancer screening and to raise money throughout the month of October to support the Studio’s Breast Cancer Fund. Support for “The Art of Being a Woman” is provided by E&A Credit Union and Woman’s Life.
Contest deadline for bra entries is September 30th, 2009. (Free bras for decorating are available at the Studio. And patrons are encouraged to drop off gently used bras for artists to use.) During the month of October, friends, neighbors, family and co workers are encouraged to drop in to Studio 1219 and vote for their favorite bra. (Only $1 per vote!) The bra with the most votes will win a prize. Additional prize categories this year include bras decorated by: women, men, youths under 12 years old, business or group, high school student, college student, restaurant and more!
Last year Studio 1219 generated over $3,500 for St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Port Huron Hospital to use directly for cancer screening of uninsured and under-insured women in St. Clair County.
“Get busy and make your bra creative and colorful,” pitched the Studio’s Executive Director, Lee-Perry Belleau. “Any medium is acceptable: fabric, paint, buttons, bows, glitter, metal—use your imagination. Give it a name and drop it off to Studio 1219. All bras will be auctioned at the Bra Finale at 7pm on Thursday, October 29, 2009, when local firemen model them at the Studio.”
Also, 8pm on the evening of Saturday, October 3rd will kick off this special month with LUNAFest, a film festival of independent films by, for, and about women, sponsored by Luna Bars. Bring friends and family to enjoy the festivities. The gallery will feature art by, for, and about women by our local gallery artists. And, on October 17 the Studio presents “Women in Song and Verse.” All in all, October is a month to celebrate “The Art of Being A Woman.”
