Local artists see a jump in sales at Port Huron's Studio 1219 as a sign the art incubator is becoming increasingly visible among area residents.

The art studio, which opened in fall 2005 at 1219 Military St., sold a record amount of artwork at the end of 2006, netting more than $38,000 in sales from October to December, said Gwyn Atkinson, the studio's operations director.

Typically, between $1,000 and $4,000 in artwork is sold monthly, she said.

The Writer's Corner group at Studio 1219 is open to anyone with a desire to write. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry - if you want to put it on paper and share it with others, this is the place for you. We are meeting the second Thursday of the month at Studio 1219 (7pm). Some members of the group are just beginning to explore the craft of writing. Others maybe published authors. But, around the table, all are equal. Your writing will be critiqued honestly, courteously, and vigorously.

Our procedure is simple. Bring a sample of your work, read it to the group, and get feedback from others around the table. Be prepared to offer your comments about other people's work. You can register by signing up at the Studio, calling 810.984.ARTS or by emailing your info to maureen@studio1219.com.

Mark your calendars for Fire & Ice: September 15 & 16, 2007. This will be Studio 1219's first Festival featuring the Citizen's First Pottery & Glass Studio. A committee of potters and educators are planning this Educational Festival for the Blue Water Area. We will be Raku firing for the Public. What is Raku? It's an ancient firing process for pottery that gives you beautiful metallic looking glazes through a reduction process. Just purchase a plan bisque piece of pottery, sit and glaze it; then, watch our talented artists fire it in the Raku Yard at the festival. The process takes about one hour and leaves you with a beautiful decorative piece of pottery.

We will host a Pottery Olympics on the county stage that is open to anyone that pre-registers. Who can throw the fastest? Who can throw the tallest–blind folded? The audience will determine the winners! Check out the Arts in Action Tent filled with potters, glass and wood artists demonstrating their talents. Don't forget the kids... they will have a great time in the Children's Art Experience Tent with glass, and clay projects. It's all for FREE.

Call to Artists is on going until September 1st, 2007. Just download an application (PDF - Artist Application) for the festival and submit it.

Volunteers: Even if you're not an artist you can still participate, we need lots of volunteers; download the Volunteer Form (PDF) that gives you opportunities to help in other areas.

After reading a newspaper article about a woman who hosted a regular drum circle in her house, Caroline Imbrunone decided to stop by for a session.

With the recent death of her husband, Imbrunone was looking for a new experience. So she went. Someone let her borrow a drum. And she realized something special was happening - she had a connection with each person in the circle playing his or her own rhythm.

In the vibrations that came from tapping her hand against the animal skin drum, Imbrunone felt life. The drum beat was like a heartbeat, said Imbrunone, 69, of China Township.

"Everybody has a heartbeat, everyone has a drum beat," she said.

Due to an overwhelming response, maritime artist Bob McGreevy has been invited back to present 'Lost Legends of the Lake' in the Van Gogh Gallery this Thursday, July 19th at 7:00 p.m. The exhibition is highlighted by the arrival of nine new works by this distinguished artist. The initial reception was held on Friday, June 29th and Bob's 'Lost Legends of the Lake' went over so well that he has been asked to do a repeat performance. There is no cost and it is a great opportunity to meet the artist and discuss his work.

Fellow artist Stuart Pidasel said, "I came to the reception to view Bob's new works and came away enjoying his presentation as much as his paintings." McGreevy has been painting and modeling lake vessels for over 30 years.

McGreevy's nine latest works are taken from his three new series: "Lost Legends of the Lakes," "Great Lakes Classics," and "Aircraft of the Great Lakes." Reproductions of these works will be available for purchase, throughout July, as "gicle'e" prints, an advanced method of printing that uses archival inks for greater-color fastness and clarity.

"Bob's presentation was so well received at the inception of his exhibit", states Gallery Director David Stoneberg, "that we have asked him to allow people a second opportunity to come and listen to his narrative."

Plein Aire Painters Lezly Straub and Rhonda Johnson paint at Lighthouse Beach and encourage other artists to join them each Saturday from 9 a.m. till noon.

This August a group of Plein Aire painters will be showing their artwork at Studio 1219 in the Van Gogh Gallery.

Since last summer, most Saturday mornings Rhonda Johnson, Lezly Straub or Stefanie Kruchko-Hanson can be seen setting up various easels and materials to paint at Lighthouse Park.

Plein aire is a fancy French word for painting outside. The group likes the term plein aire because to them it conveys the quality of an experience that is both exhilarating and relaxing.

"Working in the fresh air is different than working in the studio," says Stefanie Kruchjo-Hanson. "It is a refreshing change." Stefanie has a BA in Art from St. Mary's college, and a Master's in painting from the University of Iowa. She is an adjunct faculty of St. Clair Community College.
