Local artists see a jump in sales at Port Huron's Studio 1219 as a sign the art incubator is becoming increasingly visible among area residents.

The art studio, which opened in fall 2005 at 1219 Military St., sold a record amount of artwork at the end of 2006, netting more than $38,000 in sales from October to December, said Gwyn Atkinson, the studio's operations director.

Typically, between $1,000 and $4,000 in artwork is sold monthly, she said.

The Writer's Corner group at Studio 1219 is open to anyone with a desire to write. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry - if you want to put it on paper and share it with others, this is the place for you. We are meeting the second Thursday of the month at Studio 1219 (7pm). Some members of the group are just beginning to explore the craft of writing. Others maybe published authors. But, around the table, all are equal. Your writing will be critiqued honestly, courteously, and vigorously.

Our procedure is simple. Bring a sample of your work, read it to the group, and get feedback from others around the table. Be prepared to offer your comments about other people's work. You can register by signing up at the Studio, calling 810.984.ARTS or by emailing your info to maureen@studio1219.com.

Mark your calendars for Fire & Ice: September 15 & 16, 2007. This will be Studio 1219's first Festival featuring the Citizen's First Pottery & Glass Studio. A committee of potters and educators are planning this Educational Festival for the Blue Water Area. We will be Raku firing for the Public. What is Raku? It's an ancient firing process for pottery that gives you beautiful metallic looking glazes through a reduction process. Just purchase a plan bisque piece of pottery, sit and glaze it; then, watch our talented artists fire it in the Raku Yard at the festival. The process takes about one hour and leaves you with a beautiful decorative piece of pottery.

We will host a Pottery Olympics on the county stage that is open to anyone that pre-registers. Who can throw the fastest? Who can throw the tallest–blind folded? The audience will determine the winners! Check out the Arts in Action Tent filled with potters, glass and wood artists demonstrating their talents. Don't forget the kids... they will have a great time in the Children's Art Experience Tent with glass, and clay projects. It's all for FREE.

Call to Artists is on going until September 1st, 2007. Just download an application (PDF - Artist Application) for the festival and submit it.

Volunteers: Even if you're not an artist you can still participate, we need lots of volunteers; download the Volunteer Form (PDF) that gives you opportunities to help in other areas.

Food venders: Contact .

Where: Port Huron, south of the Black River, Between Studio 1219 (1219 Military) and The Port Huron Museum (1115 Sixth St.) including Grace Episcopal Church (1213 Sixth St.) parking Lot.

After reading a newspaper article about a woman who hosted a regular drum circle in her house, Caroline Imbrunone decided to stop by for a session.

With the recent death of her husband, Imbrunone was looking for a new experience. So she went. Someone let her borrow a drum. And she realized something special was happening - she had a connection with each person in the circle playing his or her own rhythm.

In the vibrations that came from tapping her hand against the animal skin drum, Imbrunone felt life. The drum beat was like a heartbeat, said Imbrunone, 69, of China Township.

"Everybody has a heartbeat, everyone has a drum beat," she said.

Studio 1219 is always looking for artists. This time, however, the call is a little different.

Port Huron's art incubator is looking for artists who want to show off their work, demonstrate their skills, and test their senses of humor in some fun competition in the inaugural Fire & Ice Festival Sept. 15-16.

The two-day pottery and glass festival will include demonstrations by artists and work in both media, Raku pottery firings, a children’s art tent, and the Pottery Olympics with such events as who can throw the fastest, who can throw the tallest cylinder and the longest handle. It will also feature Studio 1219 Citizen's First Pottery & Glass Studio.

The bad news is Blue Water Area arts groups did not receive from 30% to 75% of the state funding they were expecting this fiscal year due to cuts aimed at resolving Michigan's budget crisis.

The worse news is things aren't likely to be any better when the 2008 fiscal year begins in October.

Organizations such as the Port Huron Museum and International Symphony Orchestra have weathered the financial storm so far - thanks mostly to private donors - but officials said it is only a matter of time before the cuts start to affect the festivals, concerts and services they offer.

Maggie McVeigh, 6, of St. Clair held a drawing close to her face and cheerfully announced it was a self-portrait.

"This is what I looked like in kindergarten," she said. "I had long hair then, but now I have short hair."

Portraits were one of the many art forms about a dozen children ages 6 to 12 have been learning this week in Art Camp, hosted by Studio 1219 in Port Huron. Students will be able to choose their favorite work and display it during a Studio 1219 event next year, said Maureen Scallen, the studio's educational director.
As part of the camp, students learned about famous artists, such as neo-impressionism founder George Seurat and impressionist Mary Cassat, and were able to practice their own work in painting, drawing and pottery.
